Active as a marine engineer before he joined a leading IACS classification society in 1994. He could continuously broaden his practical and theoretical knowledge in ship operation engineering there with the result to become a specialist for damage management resp. the related repair technics. He was appointed as independent expert worldwide and acted as a court expert in that time as well.
Working out tailor made solutions is one of his core competences. Here asking the right questions and an irrespective assessment of the relevance of information details were the approaches to find the solution for a problem together with clients and/or colleagues. He acquired the opinion that every damage must be taken as an obligation to learn from it. Prevention is the most important consequence from a damage case.

Preceding the creation of SEACOTEC, Dr. Surma has been working as a business unit manager for a leading classification society with international reach. Stephan Assheuer is long standing expert on statutory maritime regulations familiar with international, national and EU regulations and having 20 years experience in IMO work as technical advisor. During his career he established links to all major Flag states, as Vice President Regulatory Affairs of Germanischer Lloyd and since 2010 as partner of admaris GmbH. He will support you in all matters related to exemptions including development of interim solutions providing an equivalent level of safety.
